8th Chicago Officer Convicted in Tow Truck Scam

May 13, 2013

A federal jury has convicted a 46-year-old Chicago police officer for accepting payments from a tow truck driver in exchange for steering business from accident scenes his way.

Jurors returned with a verdict against Deavalin Page after two hours of deliberations Friday. They convicted him on two counts of attempted extortion. Each carries a maximum 20-year prison term.

The Chicago man is the latest conviction stemming from the FBI’s Operation Tow Scam. He’s the eighth officer convicted in the long-running investigation.

Prosecutors say he took payments from a driver totaling $3,200. The driver was cooperating with the undercover investigation. Among the exhibits at Page’s trial was video evidence.

Page was assigned to desk duty after the allegations arose. He’ll remain free on bond at least until his Oct. 23 sentencing.
