Indiana House Passes Bill Limiting Moped Speeds

February 27, 2013

The Indiana House has approved a bill that would set a 30 mph speed limit for moped users on the state’s roadways.

The measure approved Monday on a 75-18 vote now heads to the Indiana Senate. The bill also calls for moped operators to drive on the right-hand side of the road, except when preparing to make a left hand turn, and to register the vehicles with the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Republican state Rep. Tim Neese of Elkhart has pushed for limits on moped speeds. He tells The Elkhart Truth that many accidents in Elkhart County involve mopeds.

He says this year is the third time in the last six years the issue has come before lawmakers.
