Grants Will Pay for Thousands of Smoke Alarms in Iowa

    That is a great project. However putting the funds into residential sprinklers grants to support homeowners would have been a better program. Some of the funnds could also be spent on educating the public about the effictiveness of residential sprinklers. Smoke detectors if working only warn the occupants of a fire and they then have to be able to evacuate the building. Fire sprinklers control the fire or put it without the occupants doing anything. Many people of all ages die in homes with smoke alarms in them. Their are some populations that can not or have difficulty getting out of a building like, children 0-6 years of age, elderly 65 and over and people with disablities. I am a fire marshal in a community in Colorado.
