University of Iowa Rock Climbing Wall to Reopen

A rock climbing wall at the University of Iowa where a student fell in November injuring his spine will reopen next week with new safety guidelines in place.

The wall has been closed since Nov. 8 when 21-year-old Spencer Bean fell 30 feet.

The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports new policy and procedure recommendations were released Friday. They must be implemented before the wall may reopen on Tuesday.

Among the requirements – all staff and climbers must be trained, tested and approved. A camera that can fully and clearly monitor the climbing area must be installed and users must sign newly designed waiver and code of conduct statements.

Bean was hospitalized and underwent surgery. He is recovering in Illinois.
