November 14, 2012

Armstrong Forensic Engineers announced the addition of fire investigation and thermal analysis to its forensic engineering services and the hiring of Senior Consultant Charles O. Funk, Ph.D., P.E., CFEI, CVFI and Lead Research Specialist Jody Ewers, J.D., M.L.I.S. in its office in Detroit, Michigan.

“We are pleased to welcome Charles Funk to our team in Detroit. Charles’ thermal sciences experience, which includes conducting fire cause and origin investigations as well as analyses of combustion, fluid flow, and thermodynamics, will be extremely valuable to a range of clients,” said Jeffrey D. Armstrong, P.E., chairman and founder of Armstrong.

Dr. Funk specializes in vehicle and mechanical engineering analysis, thermal analysis and specializes in accident reconstruction and failure analysis. For his doctoral dissertation, he performed experimental and computational comparisons of turbulent flows in an internal combustion engine. This included innovative work in high-resolution turbulence measurements that contributed to the development and validation of advanced turbulence models.

Funk is a Certified Fire and Explosions Investigator (CFEI), a Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators, and a member of the National Fire Protection Agency and International Association of Arson Investigators. Dr. Funk has investigated numerous gas and electric appliances to determine whether or not they had a role in causing the fire as well as determining the origin and cause for residential, commercial, and vehicle fires.

Ewers has extensive experience in forensic engineering, legal research, and litigation support. “Jody is a phenomenal talent and we are lucky to have her at Armstrong,” said Brian T. Weaver, P.E., director of Biomechanics.
