Bridge Deterioration a Worry for Indiana County

November 13, 2012

Residents in Miami County, Ind., could find themselves stranded unless officials find a way to replace a deteriorating bridge before it collapses.

The 20-foot bridge spans Weesau Creek on a dead-end road with six houses at the end of it.

The concrete under the bridge has worn away and support beams are crumbling. County engineer Ken Einselen tells the Kokomo Tribune that the bridge could collapse and cut off road access to the homes.

Highway Superintendent Sam Waltz says the best option is to acquire nearby land to build a new bridge north of the current span, but officials don’t want to be forced to use eminent domain to take the property.

The county hopes to begin work on a new bridge next year.
