Iowa City officials have gotten some good news about the landfill fire that’s believed to be still burning under its clay cap.
Public works director Rick Fosse told The Gazette that state officials say the material that’s been burned won’t be classified as a “special waste” that must be specially handled and trucked elsewhere for permanent disposal. It can stay in the landfill.
Fosse says the state Natural Resources Department decision will help the city keep its costs in handling the fire between $4 million and $5 million, rather than reach upward of $6 million if the waste were to require special handling.
The fire began May 26 on roughly 7 1/2 acres in the 200-acre landfill. The flames eventually spread to a layer of shredded tires used for drainage.
