New Apartment Complex in Missouri Heavily Damaged

A fire that heavily damaged a new apartment complex in Columbia has left some students scrambling to find housing before the fall semester begins at the University of Missouri.

The Brookside on College complex, which was set to open in the fall, was damaged by a fire early Sunday. All 73 apartments at the complex had been rented.

Fire battalion chief Steve Sapp says the fire caused at least $7 million in damage. A cause has not been determined.

The owners of the complex say about 40 percent of the units will be open in August, with the rest ready by mid-October.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports Stephens College is offering temporary housing. The University of Missouri’s Wellness Resource Center also will help students find alternative housing.
