Colleges and universities are not babysitting services nor are they obligated to protect every student from themselves. If the campus police would have taken him away the parent’s would have sued for that. Besides, once someone decides to take their own life, it’s just a matter of time until it happens.

If someone had given him a loaded gun and he chose to pull the trigger, it was still his choice. He had to acquire the strength to commit the act; the prelude of attempts are usually calls for help and proof of a problem where the strength to complete the act was not complete. Sad, but forcing the police to pay a settlement won’t bring him back.
