Corps Taking Bids for South Dakota Causeway Repairs

The Army Corps of Engineers is accepting bids for a project to rebuild a flood-damaged causeway that connects the city of Pierre, S.D., to LaFromboise Island on the Missouri River.

The corps says the causeway will be restored to how it was before last summer’s flooding that damaged the 1,400-foot-long causeway and washed away a 500-foot section. Officials say the project could cost anywhere from $1 million to $4 million.

KCCR radio reports that bids are due by March 23. The project contract is to be awarded in mid-April. Construction is expected to take about six months.

The causeway is a popular place for people to walk and fish. It also provides access to city drinking water wells on the island.
