Settlement in Death of Missouri Student Hit by Bus

February 9, 2012

The family of a northwest Missouri teenager who died after being hit by a school bus reached a $5 million settlement with the bus company.

Sixteen-year-old Mason Adams, a junior at St. Joseph’s Lafayette High School, died Nov. 15, 2010, after he was hit by the bus while on his way to school.

His mother, Bridgett Blasi, sued First Student Inc., the bus company.

A Buchanan County judge approved the $5 million settlement Monday. Part of the money will be used for a bus driver’s training course and a scholarship and baseball field in Mason’s memory.

The driver, Tracey Jones, was sentenced to two years of probation, 15 days of shock detention and community service.

Prosecutors said her visibility was blocked by snow and frost on the bus windows.
