we experienced something very similar with a casino in Detroit with one exception. We had a spotter on the ground monitoring the concrete pour. When he saw the start of structural failure on the concrete tables we stopped the pour and got everyone off the pour. We were given assurance prior to the start of the pour that the tables would not fail, and the company that engineered the tables even signed off on the tables. Wet concrete is a hazardous safety issue with weight capacity being one of many concerns. Often, with casino projects it’s a big push to get the job done. Developers and contractors want it done for profit purposes and bonuses included in the contracts. Sometimes, oversight is missed. But that doesn’t give the contractors excuse to overlook safety. We were very fortunate with our near miss. For Cleveland and Cincinnati…they weren’t. It’s a sick feeling for anyone who witnessed and experienced a potentially deadly situation like this.
