Michigan Fire Destroys 6 City Buses Costing $2M

Officials say an early-morning fire at a Detroit Department of Transportation bus yard destroyed six buses costing a total of more than $2 million.

The fire Wednesday sent thick, black smoke into the air on the city’s west side. Officials say a firefighter injured a shoulder while hauling hose to fight the blaze and one bus driver suffered smoke inhalation while helping move away other buses.

By about 6:30 a.m. EST fire officials reported the blaze was contained.

A roof on the building where the buses burned collapsed. Stephen Serkaian, a spokesman for Mayor Dave Bing, told The Associated Press that the buses each cost about $350,000. He says replacement will be covered by fire insurance.

He credited drivers who drove other buses away through smoke for limiting the damage.
