Flood Insurance Claim Deadlines Near in South Dakota

September 23, 2011

State and federal officials are cautioning South Dakota flood victims that time might be running out to file flood insurance claims.

Normally, claims for flood damage under policies underwritten by the National Flood Insurance Program must be filed within 60 days of the damage occurring. The length of time was extended to 120 days for Missouri River flooding. For buildings damaged by river floodwaters on June 1, the deadline would be Sept. 29.

Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state Office of Emergency Management are encouraging people to file their claims, especially those homeowners who were not able to get to their homes for weeks or months to document damage.
