North Dakota Getting Grants to Improve Bus and Truck Safety

September 1, 2011

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Tuesday announced more than $2 million in grants to improve commercial truck and bus safety in North Dakota.

The state highway patrol is getting more than $1.9 million for compliance reviews, safety audits and inspections across the state. About $349,000 will go to the state Transportation Department to implement an electronic commercial driver’s license testing system.

Separately, the patrol announced a new “Operation Whiteout” initiative. The strategy is to put numerous troopers and their white squad cars in select areas and roadways to reduce crashes during peak travel periods.
