The Iowa Department of Natural Resources plans to hold meetings in six Iowa communities this month to gather input on new floodplain plants.
The DNR is working with the Iowa Flood Center and FEMA to develop more comprehensive maps for communities in the state using state-of-the-art technology.
Many communities have operated with outdated floodplain maps or no maps at all and officials say the new maps will more accurately indicate the extent of flooding to within inches of elevation instead of the current 5- to 10-foot elevation.
The first meeting is planned for Nov. 16 in Clear Lake. The others will be on Nov. 16 in Spencer; Nov. 17 in Des Moines and Atlantic; and in Washington and Independence on Nov. 18.
