Decades of fraud and mis-management by minority mayors have caught up to this city. The majority of the population is comprised of indigent blacks with no education, no marketable skills, no jobs, and nothing to do. The welfare roles have to be massive. Setting fires has always been a pastime in Detroit. Hiring more firefighters isn’t the solution. It’s like trying to fix a flat tire by changing the driver. Why do the residents of the decaying city set fires? If you walk downtown near the Fox Theatre you’ll see the burned out buildings from the 1960 race riots that have never been razed. If this is how the citizens act and if this is what they want, let them torch the whole place. This city doesn’t deserve taxpayer money to put out fires set in deserted houses. The proverbial “fat lady” is warming up for Detroit. Last one out….turn out the lights.

Donovan, I get what you’re saying and appreciate your sentiment. What do you do, though, when you flat don’t have enough people to put out these fires? Are you saying “let it burn?” How does that help? I also feel that you are unnecesarily injecting race into the discussion. I’m sure you’d say you have the courage to point out the obvious (and it is obvious) but indigents come in all colors and shapes.

I agree 100% with Sparky, I do not want my tax money to go to a City that has no desire to help itself.

Why should all of america pay for the problems of any one city. This is a local problem let the local and state government solve it. As a Taxpayer and proud American I am sick to death of the fed always sticking it’s nose into the problems of local governments.

    Sparky,
Having lived in the Detroit area I had firsthand experience with the inner city and its issues. I referenced race because it is a legitimate issue not only in the behavior of the residents, but in the running of city. It may not be PC, but it’s a fact. The likes of Coleman Yound and Kwami Fitzpatrick racially polarized the city. Coleman Young went so far as to tell the white business to get out of the city as they weren’t needed. They took his advice and now the city is a virtual slum. To make matters worse, the UAW and it’s greed helped the big 3 collapse and non-competitive. The city should be shutdown and the rest of the state turned into a national park.

Isn’t it easier to let it burn then bulldoze the debris and haul it off instead of fighting the fire until it’s out then bulldozing the debris and haul it off?

Either way its sad. Detroit was known around the world as the car mfg capital of not only the US but the world. Now its a hollowed out shell and to many is now a symbol of our decline. Maybe it shouldn’t become a national park but maybe a national cemetary.
