Illinois Marks 20th Anniversary of Plainfield Tornado

Survivors of a deadly tornado that roared across the northern Illinois village of Plainfield have marked the storm’s 20th anniversary.

About 200 people gathered August 28 for a ceremony that was held near downtown Plainfield on a spot that was in the storm’s path.

The Aug. 28, 1990, tornado killed 29 people and injured more than 300.

Plainfield Trustee Paul Fay says 29 trees will be planted as a tribute to the victims.

Justina Page lost her 17-year-old daughter, Latisha Herrod, and 5-week-old granddaughter, Titiania Brown, in the storm.

She says the ceremony means that people still care.

The tornado damaged or destroyed more than 1,000 buildings and caused about $200 million in damage. The Will County communities of Crest Hill and Joliet also were affected.
