State and local authorities in Indiana will be paying closer attention to railroad safety violations this week.
Gov. Mitch Daniels has declared the seven days beginning Sunday as rail safety week in the state.
The group Indiana Operation Lifesaver, state and local police, the state Department of Transportation and railroad companies are emphasizing the dangers of disregarding railroad crossing laws. The effort will include stepped-up enforcement of rail safety laws.
Indiana Operation Lifesaver says there were 98 railroad crossing collisions in Indiana last year resulting in 14 deaths and injuries to 36 people. Indiana ranked fourth highest among the states last year in railroad crossing collisions.
