Ringgold County, Iowa, June 1 Twister Rated an EF2

June 4, 2010

A tornado that destroyed a livestock building and severely damaged other buildings in southern Iowa packed winds of up to 135 miles per hour.

A survey team from the National Weather Service office in Des Moines visited the area north of Mount Ayr in Ringgold County.

A tornado touched down just after 5 p.m. on June 1, hitting the farm before weakening and causing damage to another home and building further to the north.

County officials estimated damage to the first farm as high as $4 million.

Craig Cogil, a meteorologist with the weather service, says the tornado is being rated as an EF2, which carries winds of between 111 and 135 mph.

He says the twister was on the ground for about 11/2 miles and cut a path about 250 yards wide.
