Indiana State Police and local police are running special patrols in 20 rural counties over the next two weeks looking for motorists not wearing seat belts.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says the increased patrols began Friday. They will occur in 20 rural counties found to have a high percentage of traffic fatalities involving unrestrained motorists between 2003 and 2007. It isn’t saying which 20 counties they are.
The institute says more than two-thirds of the state’s traffic fatalities occurred on rural roadways last year. It says data also shows that Americans driving or riding on rural roadways face a greater risk of being injured or killed than those in urban or suburban areas.
