It is correct that most senior drivers lose some depth and speed perception…..they can’t tell that 19 year old with his girl friend in the car is going 80 in a 50 when he pulls out, causing a crash for which he is charged at fault and maybe loses his license because there were no witnesses. Those Kansas kids need to slow down and the number of severe accidents will drop.

There is no question old people suffer from many conditions that come with advanced age. Poor vision, multiple prescription drugs, lack of speed and depth perception, diminished motor skills and response time. There is no silver bullet to improve them or make them safer behind the wheel.

Instead of caving in to the pressure from AARP on politicians who don’t want to lose their vote, somebody needs to enact a law REQUIRING annual vision and road tests starting at age 70. That will identify those who lack the ability to drive safely and their licenses pulled for their own safety as well as the general public. Old people get angry at the suggestion because they perceive it as a loss of their independence. Well, I get angry too at my perception of losing my life because some old pus bag just has to drive 100 miles a month.

Dang, Jake, try to move faster when that old Buick races at you at 25mph. How many times have you gone around them & cut them off because they weren’t going fast enough to suit you?

I was traveling on the Garden State Parkway a few days ago doing the 65 mph limit when the traffic in front of me came to a screeching halt. After about 5 minutes of waiting to change lanes (trying to acclerate from 0 – 65 as fast as possible to avoid getting rear eneded) I found the problem. Some old jackass in a 1980 Buick was doing 35 mph. This is not only dangerous, but illegal. To make matters worse, he was in the high speed lane. I can only imagine the mess he’ll cause when trying to exit and has to move across 4 lanes of high speed traffic.

I agree w/Jake. While there many old farts who can still drive safely and deserve the PRIVILEDGE of having a license, there is an equal number of fumbling old idiots who pose a threat to good drivers. I agree with mandatory testing after age 70. Otherwise, these dinasours will drive until they drop. I’d like to live long enough to become old too, just like them.

Maybe signs should be posted warning of old drivers just like the ones for “deer crossing” or “children at play”. How about this; ” CAUTION: beyone this point you may encounter dim-witted old drivers”.

My parents are older and love to drive, although it scares me. I do agree there should be annual tests for them as it’s hard for me to take their license on my own…they may disown me. But, please don’t call older folks names. They have paid their dues and deserve respect. You too will be old one day.
