“You run from the police, you takes what you get.” The city shouldn’t have paid his money-grubbing family a cent.

And caps won’t help? This is the type of ridiculous lawsuit that should be thrown out if any judge had any guts. Wonder how “close” these family members were to him?
What moron drives a bulldozer down US23 and doesn’t expect something bad to come of it.

As the article said, it could have gone adversly, it was a business decision to settle. No guts to try it and accept the outcome? Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda….so what? Must be pretty weak attorneys on the county side.

“Charles Keiser, 47, was pursued on foot by officers after driving a bulldozer on U.S. 23 and blocking traffic. He drowned while face-down in a swampy area in Hartland Township, 40 miles west of Detroit, on Thanksgiving Day 2004.”

problem with this is how did he end up in the swamp? if the officer was not found guilty of any wrongdoing, then why did the state settle at all?!

lawyers get 40%? is this not an excessive amount for them? now, you know why most congressman and senators are lawyers, they get the most out of the money into their own pockets and not the folks they represent. 9 people are sharing that balance, how they get to share i am not sure either? was he married? or how did these folks get eligible for the remaining balance?

wudchuck…the state did not settle. They went to trial and won.

It was the county that settled. I guess they did not want to risk a huge award being granted, so they opted to settle. Frustrating, I am sure for the claims person at the insurance company.

yea, your are right. but why would the county be thinking they are responsible, when in fact the state trooper works for the state and not the county. the family got lucky because, the county should not have settled.
