He hasn’t had a DUI in the last 9 years. Seem strange he has gone 9 years. Maybe he has been in jail for that period of time and hasn’t been able to drink and drive.
how long does it take to finally tell this guy – revoked license? many states give you 3, but 16 and now 17? i don’t care if it’s been 9 years since his last. he should have never gotten a license. someone in the DMV needs to get their own heads rolling over this. if i were a hurt pary in this, i would be suing the state and the party in question. this is ridiculous.
How in the world did this man have a license? Driving is a privledge – not a right. This is crazy that he’d still have a license even if his last offense was 9 years ago. My math skills didn’t get me into MIT but it looks like he averaged 1.8 drunk driving charges for each of the years that he was of legal driving age(16-46) for his first 17 offenses. The average would actually be higher because I’m sure that he didn’t have a valid license for 30 concurrent years. Why isn’t there something in place that would prevent this man (and others with similar DD issues) from obtaining a license?
This gentleman obviously doesn’t have a driving problem, he has a drinking problem. And, it does no good to revoke his driver’s license, because drunks will drive anyway whether they have a license or not. There’s only one place someone like this belongs, and that’s not on the streets to kill someone else!
The article never mentioned if he had a valid driver license or not. It is all irrelavant anyway…if someone is irresponsible enough to drive intoxicated, they are also irresposible enough to drive without a valid license.
Agree w/all regarding the absurdity of this case. Citations and license suspensions don’t work. You can pay the tickets and you don’t need a piece of paper to get back behind the wheel. These kinds of chronic offenders don’t respect the law. And where did the magic number of 3 offenses before anyone get’s serious come from? The courts need to stop playing around with these time bombs and get serious about them. Here’s some suggestions:
First Offense:
1. $1,000 fine.
2. Mandatory attendance at a drunk driving course paid for by the offender.
3. 3 days jail time.
4. Notice to the offenders insurance carrier. (rate increase or cancellation will result)
The second offense:
1. Fine of $2,500
2. 30-days in jail
3. Impound ANY vehicle the drunk is caught driving for 90-days.(regardless of who owns it.)
The 3rd offense:
1. Fine of $5,000
2. 180 days in jail.
3. Impound ANY vehicle the drunk is caught driving and sell it at auction with the owner forfeiting the proceeds. for 90-days.
When there is a perceivable consequence there will be behavioral change. Will the courts ever have the balls to enforce such draconian measures? Of course not. So maybe everybody should just accept the status quo and stop getting frustrated over stories like this.
Chances are, the souse didn’t have a license to drive. His excessive drinking and driving habits are not his problem, they are ours and those of society at large. For the greater good, this dude needs to be locked away somewhere forever. Problem solved.
