    @ Amy, Brava.

I’m in NV and the Mexicans here get offended that our office doesn’t speak Spanish. Took me forever to find a job as a CSR because I don’t speak Spanish. Never thought in a million years I’d have to know a foreign language to work in my own country.

What’s next? Wisconsin, El Estado Queso? Never figured Wisconsin was a border state with an influx of immigrants. How do they get there, through Canada? Are we safeguarding the right border?

It’s time to stop catering to immigrants who are too lazy or too stupid to learn to communicate in the language of the land……ENGLISH. You never hear of any other nationalities getting this kind of consideration. The ability to speak, read, and write English should be a REQUIREMENT to live in this country. This kind of policy only drives up the cost of insurance for everyone else. It’s not just the forms, and the webpage, it requires translators. The inability to communicate is also a social liability. How can these people expect to communicate on a job? To a doctor? To AMERICANS? We’re headed for some mongrel state where there are so many languages spoken that no one will be able to communicate.

Come on, is it really a big deal if some form is in Spanish or not, What shocks me is how rude and horrible all of the reader comments have been. This is a poor representation of our industry. I RECOMMEND THAT THE INSURANCE JOURNAL CREATE A RACIST FILTER.

Dear Simplistic Ms. Wisconsin Bleeding Heart Liberal – you just don’t understand the point.

It has NOTHING to do with what the Spanish-speaking individual provides to the common good. It has EVERYTHING to do with assimilation and the need for a common language while respecting different cultures.

In our grandparents days (or whenever yours came over) people WANTED to be part of the melting pot and there was NO need to coddle to individual groups of foreign speaking peoples – except for the private industries and businesses targeting sales in their language or territory.

But you didn’t see government forms in the Midwest printed in German, or in Chinese in CA, or Finnish in the U.P.. Or Spanish anywhere. That’s why road signs don’t have subtitles.

In most cases, the second generation (first born here) would be bilingual (so they could talk to and on behalf of their parents), and the third gen would be pure English speaking. By then the dispersal would have taken family members far and wide.

Nowadays, it appears that while the subcultures are speading out in the same way, it’s only because the newly-arrived are inundating the areas. Though its too early to tell, my guess is that the second and third generations won’t follow the paths of prior waves, will speak Spanish longer, and won’t stray far from home for opportunity.

You cannot make people change their culture, but enabling them to take advantage of the benefits by requiring ESL courses would be expensive too. More than multiple printing? Not sure. But in the long run, it may pay especially if cultural resistance against assimilation is strong.

One wonders where the next wave will come from.

Anne O, thank you for pointing out that I missed the point, Actually I did not. I kind of agree with a lot of your points, but what my comment is about is the tone of the comments. I do not dispute the points you make, just the rude way in which they were made.
