This guy was 69 years old. While the product may have affected his lungs, it had nothing to do with his heart. Old people usually die from failure of multiple major organs i.e. heart & lungs. Even so, what is this guy really worth? Because of his age and minimal earning potential the economic damages couldn’t be much. He lived a reasonably long life and could have died from natural causes just as easily. Notwithstanding the product injury, how long did he really have with a bad heart? He lived in IOWA for Pete’s sake. He probably died of boredom.

It is my understanding that the manufacturers were aware of possible adverse respiratory effects and did nothing to mitigate them. Is it possible the bulk of the $7mm was punitive?

    Wow, NEVER heard that one.

We happen to live long lives because we have low crime, great schools, fresh produce and air (breadbasket of america), excellent quality of life, and basically really low stress.

Its when we have to deal with people like you that we get stressed. The only idiots we have wandering keep on walking and end up outside of Iowa and posting negative comments on blogs.

Also, you have an issue with the verdict.. The butter flavor in popcorn has been a know hazard for years. How long has this guy been sick and fighting for compensation? Whats your life worth? Do you have a family? Get real. The problems the man was having may have contributed to his heart problem. I bet the guy would rather be alive and well versus dead and 7 mil richer for his family.

“claims” has it right. There is no doubt that a huge portion of the award is punitive. Also, what about medical and associated costs, and quality of life issues?
Iowa always ranks high in longevity, quality of life and happiness metrics.

Come on Dread … your comments are worse than ignorant, they are disrespectful.
