The National Weather Service is starting to assess the spring flooding potential in eastern South Dakota.
Hydrologist Mike Gillespie says the northern reach of the James River is one area being watched. He says flooding potential on the Vermillion River is low at this point, and the Big Sioux River between Watertown and Brookings could see some high flows.
Gillespie says the flooding outlook could change, depending on additional snowfall, how fast it melts in spring and if there is heavy rain in late March and April.
The Weather Service will update its flood outlook in a month.
