I’ve lived in Ohio for about a year and a half, and I really do believe the statistics. There is more freight train traffic here than I have ever seen anywhere I have lived. I probably have to stop for a train about once every two weeks during my short drive to work. Unfortunately you can’t teach common sense, the lack of which is surely the cause of 99% of these incidents. However I do feel that many of the rail crossings could use improvement in terms of more road signs and more flashing lights, since many of the crossings (in my area) are on winding roads, and it is easy to come upon a crossing suddenly.
How does one ever get hit by a train. What do they move at 15mph through towns? Accompanied by the fact that they are huge, have flashing lights, whistles and street barriers…..
All the years I lived in Ohio these car/train collisions were caused by driver stupidity-usually involving a car going around the lowered gates. In other cases the car hit the side of the train as it passed by. Touchy feely new age safety ads won’t have any effect on the human fungi who don’t notice trains.
Note to Mark- Why should Ohio taxpayers have to pay for jumbo gates that prevent cars from going around them? I’m no genius but I stop for flashing red lights and I have never gone around a crossing gate.No matter how twisty the road when you come upon a train crossing there is ample opportunity to stop when you see a train. If these morons have a death wish they should go for it and good riddance.
My TV has a sticker on the back that says I probably should not stick my tongue on any of the components inside the cabinet. All I need is a screwdriver and my tongue can touch the picture tube if I feel like it in spite of the warning labe.

Why dont the gates go all the way across the roadway? And why should they ever come down when a train IS NOT approaching?
Reduce false alarms. gates down ,should mean the a train will be passing thru shortly, and make the gates imposible to go around.

Why would the tax payers pay for it. The railroad will cover the expense of making the crossings more safe. Thats how it works.
Under your logic, NO gates would be necessary. People make mistakes while driving all the time, they dont deserve the death penalty.
