Nebraska Sues Caregiver over Disabled Woman’s Care

October 16, 2008

The Nebraska attorney general’s office has sued a Lincoln company over a disabled woman’s care.

The state filed the lawsuit last week against Community Alternatives Nebraska over the care of LeAnn “Annie” Guhde. It alleges violations of the Fraudulent Medicaid Claims Act and says the company broke its contract with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The lawsuit comes more than four years after Guhde, who was 29 years old at the time, was admitted to Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center malnourished and her body covered with bed sores.

The state says it paid more than $75,000 to the company for Guhde’s care. Now, it wants $150,000 back for violating the Fraudulent Medicaid Claims Act plus $5,000 for each of the company’s 22 claims in violation of the act.

Guhde died last November of natural causes.
