Wyoming to Seek Drought Disaster Declaration

October 6, 2008

Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner said she will request a drought disaster declaration for Delaware farmers.

Acting State Secretary of Agriculture Austin Short says two crops in particular were hurt by the lack of rainfall in August and early September. He says corn and soybean yields in many areas are at least 30 percent below normal.

Meanwhile, he says farmers are facing sharply higher costs for fertilizer and other supplies.

Short says it could be several weeks before the US Department of Agriculture makes a decision on the state’s drought disaster request. If the request is granted, farmers will be eligible for low interest loans.
