The entire priest abuse issue and ensuing litigation is ridiculous. I in no way condone the behavior of a small number of priests and those in the church who ignored the problem. Having said that, enough already. There should have been a statute-of-limitations on these alleged claims. In this case (like most) the pltf. waited THIRTY FOUR YEARS to come forward. I find it inconceivable that if someone was so traumatized that it could take THIRTY FOUR YEARS to make a claim. Of course “it’s never about money” but then it was only after money was introduced into the equation that these brave souls came forward. IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY. The church finally recognized the problem. Making people rich isn’t going to speed elimination or at least mitigation of the problem. So who’s fooling who with these suits? I also don’t believe that it’s only the Catholic church that has this problem. Any organization that works with children has the risk.

I wholeheartedly agree…But now the church wants this country to back off on the illegal and of course we know why…The church is hurting for money, parishioners and lies about their reasons… the sad part is that every illegal in the church and is abused will be afraid to speak up for fear of Federal authorites possibly deporting them..

So if they are abused, who is going to know? Other then the Church and the pediphile priest?

Yeah, let’s blame THE VICTIM. He waited too long?!? Victims of childhood sexual abuse spend years suffering from guilt, embarrassment, and shame. All he wants is money? As far as I am concerned, this award hardly compensates for the fact that someone’s childhood was stolen, and that this is something he’ll have to deal with for the rest of his life. These jerks got away with it for as long as they did because for many years, no one had the courage to step forward, and when they did, the church simply reassigned the priest to another parish. No one is saying the Catholic Church is the only one with this problem, but they knew about it for years and refused to deal with it, setting up more innocent children to be victimized. Your sympathy toward the church’s actions in this matter are misguided.

Way to say it, Penny! As for you, Diane and Patriot, I hope that no one in your families ever suffer this kind of abuse – especially since you probably wouldn’t know about it until many, many years later. Being abused by a pedophine is one thing, but for those with strong ties to the Catholic Church, the fear of saying something bad about someone believed to be “annointed” by God to serve his flock is especially intimidating. The Church buried this for years – why shouldn’t they pay? Steep financial judgements have a way of changing chronic behavior at both corporations and other organizations.

We have a problem in our society. It seems the only way to get your pound of flesh is to go after MONEY. If what all these alleged victims say is true….that no amount of money can compensate them……then why do they gladly take it and run? Instead of enriching individuals with exhorbitant awards, why not create a fund to be used for ALL victims and to help change the situation? I don’t buy the argument that making an organization pay big bucks will alter it’s behavior. Does that mean that only organization with big bucks can be forced to change? I don’t buy the notion that it’s OK for the alleged victims to take 30 or 40 years to say something. I agree w/Diane, the profit motive opened the flood gates on this issue.

YES, UNFORTUNATELY ONLY MONEY WILL STOP IT. YOU’D LIKE TO THINK IT WOULD STOP CUZ IT’S WRONG. THE BIBLE SAYS IT’S BETTER TO BE UNMARRIED TO SERVE THE LORD, BUT I THINK GOD MEANS CELIBACY, NOT MESSIN WITH KIDS! THEY SHOULD ALLOW PRIESTS TO BE MARRIED!

Profit motive opened the flood gates? What are you talking about?! How else do you get the attention of those in power? They knew for years they had a problem but didn’t deal with it, and now it’s the fault of the victims? You people are unbelievable!
Yes, the victims should ask for an apology from those pedophiles who had problems for decades, which the church knew about and did nothing. Yes, a public apology: THAT will teach them to change their ways!! GET REAL!!!

For those of who believe $$$$$ is the reason that makes the world go around for the victims, then it’s “profit motive”. The same thing that keeps your agencies going. But, to those who think, $$$$$ should not be an issue, then go see the Batman Movie, and psyche out the Joker. He was fed up with $$$$$$ as the driving force of people’s existence. Either way, Rich or Poor, it’s good to have money and friends.

Apparently those that are breathing hard now thinking I condone the church need step back and re-read what I said.

No one said a damn word about the church luring the illegals to the church and most come from the hispanic group, a group that believes in the church…so we all talk about money…Money is the only thing that get someones attention but not one of you said, yep you are right…the church needs to shore up its population and they are luring the timid into the church…And, heaven forbid, there would be other pediphiles lurking in the church… Good grief..One track minds, all of you..

Patriot. Just about every one of your postings (here and elsewhere) are vague. You brought out the issue about Hispanics and Pedi-Priests in the Cath Church. The only thing missing in your tirade was Lou Dobbs! I believe the poor soul who got shafted in this article was Polish. Maybe I’m wrong; but it sure as heck — his last name is not sounding Hispanic, or Democrat Mexican, or Republican Cuban, or otherwise. Why go there? You digress, so we digress with you.
