Flooding in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium is expected to add more than $5 million to the cost of the new home of the Indianapolis Colts, officials said.
The Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority unanimously approved a resolution that creates an allowance of $5.6 million to pay for the extra work and repairs caused by the flooding.
John Klipsch, executive director of the authority, said the allowance would allow contractors to be paid until insurance payments come through.
“There’s over a dozen contractors that were impacted by this, many of them working overtime, double shifts and some 24 hours a day,” he said.
Three of four internal downspouts that carry rain water away from the roof of the stadium failed during a July 8 storm, dumping water three feet deep into a basement telecommunications nerve center.
Klipsch said the project remains on schedule for its opening next month. The $700 million, retractable-roof stadium is due to open for public tours on Aug. 16 following a grand opening ceremony Aug. 14. The PeyBack Classic Aug. 22 will feature two high school football games, and the Colts will open their home preseason schedule Aug. 24 against the Buffalo Bills.
