Midwest’s Flood-prone Communities Consider Government Buyouts

    As long as payments are going to be made – one way or the other – why doesnt the gov require that homeowners be forced to buy houseboats?

    I read somewhere that river communities in Europe have houses that are capable of rising several feet, with utilities on a tether, allowing them to maintain livablity during an inundation. Seems like a smart thing to do.

    Oh, wait a minute – this is the government. Nevermind.

    Where does the money come from to ‘buyout’ these properties?

    If the government can (or proposes to) buyout all these communities along the Mississippi, why not the coasts to prevent the disaster-rebuild cycle there? “…rebuild smarter and stronger”…unless it’s coastal, then develop it with even more potential for disaster!
