Wisconsin Woman Sentenced to Year in Jail for Arson of Home

A judge has ordered a Phillips, Wis. woman to serve a year in jail and placed her on 15 years’ probation on accusations she set her house on fire for insurance money to cover debts.

Thirty-nine-year-old Jane Dettmering was also ordered by Judge James Babler to pay more than $115,000 in restitution as part of the probation.

Dettmering was convicted of arson after a five-day jury trial in Barron County (Wis.) Circuit Court earlier this year.

Babler said not imposing a jail sentence “would make a mockery of the entire justice system.”

Dettmering is a former Barron school district teacher and most recently was a speech therapist in the Prentice school district.
