Hog Barn Fire Kills More Than 100 Pigs in Western Indiana

Authorities said a fire at a western Indiana farm killed more than 100 hogs.

When firefighters arrived at Cardinal Farms, they found its hog farrowing and nursery barn — where pregnant sows and their offspring are kept — engulfed in flames.

Coal Creek Township Fire Chief Judd Meharry estimated more than 100 pigs died in the fire about 55 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

The farm’s owner was so distraught he wouldn’t estimate how many hogs died.

Meharry said the damage would likely be in the millions of dollars. Fire officials haven’t determined what caused the fire.
