I am with you; it is refreshing to read about something positive like this. I happen to be very proud of our profession; I’ll bet Dad is just busting with pride!
when i rec’d my life and health and then worked my way up to property and casualty when i was 23. its a great feeling when you walk into a room, knowing you’re the youngest, and have that knowledge. at those ages, we’re sponges! CONGRATS TO YOU! GOOD LUCK IN ALL THAT YOU ACCOMPLISH!!!
Heather Please find a good insurance company, not State farm or All state. Heather look this company up. You will go far if you stay way from the Bad boys . Look up bad faith. see how the real world works for these dogs,.. Do not waste you time . FIND A GOODONE TO WORK FOR.
You are now at a major crossroads in your career. A choice between being an “order taker” or becoming an (independent) insurance agent.
I know very few captive agents who are happy about their decision. The question is: Do you want to be driving the bus, or just another passenger with no input as to the direction or where you will be going?
Contact your state and local independent agent’s associations: PIA – IIABA, nearly all have a Young Agents organization. You should also look into the National Association of Insurance Women. NAIW.org An excellent networking and educational organization by and for women in the insurance industry.
I’ve worked in both worlds. I am the one that was 19 when first licensed and will be 28 soon (started in the agency when 17 and as a work study program). I did NOT like being captive (this was in 2004 and I only stayed with State Farm for 8 months). I was restricted and was a number…literally! Look at your e-mail address. That should be enough to tell you that it starts with something as simple as that! In the independent world, you don’t have to say that you can’t write that anymore…you have flexibility! Again, CONGRATS on being so young! I end with this…EXPLORE ALL OF YOUR OPTIONS!
I expect to pass through this life but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow being, let me do it now… for I shall not pass this way again. By william Penn.
…that trumps all that other advice is starting out so early and to have a successful, daily, professional relationship with your Father & Grandfather. I would trade any number of awards, cruises, or commissions to have had that.
Well done & congratulations.

Kudos to this young lady, and then some. However, if she was really smart, she’d become an Independent Agent – there’s still time Honey!

Ditto, here! It’s great she has an early start and the support of her family.
