As an Ohio native who handled auto theft claims there for many years, let me assure you this is no big deal. Neither politicians nor or legal system want to do anything assertive to reduce auto theft. It’s little more than a cat and mouse game that if interrupted, would be bad for business. Parts suppliers, car dealers, rental car agencies, body shops etc. It continues to be regarded as a “victimless crime” categorized as a misdemeanor. If there was a serious charge, the jails would become over-crowded. Law enforcement is frustrated and knows who the kingpins are, but can’t really get to them. They see them at salvage auctions regularly. lackeys who steal the cars and get busted are back on the street in a matter of hours.

I lived in Mansfield for 4 years. It’s a rural community with about 60,000 and 2 car thiefs. More tractors are stolen than cars. The law of small numbers drives the impressive reduction in theft. Car theft will continue to be a problem until and unless somebody gets serious about it. I’m not holding my breath. And I’m tired of paying for methods of preventing a problem nobody else cares about.
