Ohio Officials Alert Public about Data Breach by Hartford Insurance

October 31, 2007

Hartford Life Insurance has misplaced three backup tapes containing sensitive personal information on an unknown number of Ohio consumers, state insurance regulators said.

The company says the data security breach was discovered Sept. 27.

State Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson has asked the company for further information on the number of Ohioans affected and the date the company determined sensitive information was involved, the department said in a statement Monday.

Hudson also wants to know what type of security procedures are in place at the company, headquartered in Hartford, Conn. All the information is due to the state by Nov. 16.

The company, meanwhile, has notified all customers involved.

Hartford has set up a toll-free hot line to handle questions or concerns about the incident at (800) 516-1101. Cases of suspected identify theft should be reported immediately to law enforcement.
