It is amazaing that companies like this had put lead containing coatings or materials on a glue stick cap! They could have done some quick and easy product hazard evaluation by just getting a group of young kids and give them some paper and glue sticks to play with. Guarantee you one or more puts the glue stick cap in their mouth after a few minutes…
You don’t need a Ph. D in chemistry to figure that one out. Who is running these QC departments anyway???
Ah, but that which gets inspected gets done. There is no regulation for lead in plastic and the lead was found on/in the plastic caps. With no regulation to follow they had to reason to check this out.
If Consumer Reports did a thorough job of investigating and analyzing it would have realized that a kid would have to eat or drink 2 gallons of Elmers glue to impact the level of lead in the blood. Kids have been licking their fingers after using glue for decades without incident. Why is there a sudden groundswell of concern for a proble that isn’t?
I think part of it comes from all the reports out of China. As for how much the child would have to ingest – that is irrelevant. They were testing against set standards and regulations (albeit for a different industry).
Now time to see if any new regulations come from this. I’m not sure they’re needed, but pretty sure they will come.
Does anyone find it odd that after all the years Elmers glue has been on the market that “suddenly” everyone is so enlightened that it’s safety has become a major concern? There’s harldy any products out there that don’t have something or another wrong with them. I think people are going overboard with this nonense. Teach your kids not to eat the @amned stuff.
As lastbat said, we are just very sensitive to lead right now. Everything is being tested. In a couple of years this will blow over and we will have a new “hidden danger” to stress out about.

Good job on Consumer Reports.
You are right; there are no regulations for common sense.

The lead isn’t in the glue. It’s in the caps.
