It’s good that the soldier’s granddaughter will be paid back in only 138 years. Justice is served!

Reminds me of the line from Hotshots where he’s talking about paying off a billion dollar fighter plane.

(BTW, great proof-reading IJ: “Army Reserve Spc. Roy Buckley, was died in Iraq in 2003.”) Well sir, he WAS died, not really sure what happened.

I don’t care how depressed you are — your grandchild was left without a daddy. She was just selfish in the first place. How about the soldier’s father – another thing IHJ forgot to mention. This grandmother’s life should have revolved around the granddaughter getting the best care, schooling, etc – not around herself.

Oooops… I meant the soldier’s daughter. Where’s the [Edit] button? Had to correct myself after correcting IJ’s proof readers.

I get about 933 payments, with some assumptions. I’m assuming she got at least $100,000 for the timeshare and she also got $10,000 for the jewelry. That’s full payment to her granddaughter in only 78 years. Hope she has life insurance herself to finish the payments.

Story only said she returned the timeshare, car, and jewlery. Not that she gave that money back.

(According to the story) the judgement was only to make restitution at $150/mo, I figure a woman who’d do this in the first place isn’t likely to be paying off early.

She should have kept the timeshare, rented it out, then used the rent money to pay the $150.

Disgraceful! Child support awards are higher than this, the award should have been done as a percentage income with a minimum limit (i.e. 20% of income monthly to be no less than $150). Doesn’t really matter either way since she’ll be dead before she makes a dent in it anyway, but still.

While I think what this lady did is a disgrace, I am not sure jail time on our tax dollars would rectified the situation any better. Let her earn some money and at least pay something back to the daughter. Then when you think about it, it will be the daughter who sits in judgement of grandma when grandma is 70 years old and may still have to work to pay off her debt.

For continuing to break families apart by death and the aftermath.

BTW, did Jenna pick her China pattern yet?

It’s bad enough this little girl lost her daddy…but the relationship with her grandmother too? This lady is a shame to society.

Indy…your way out of line on this. It doesn’t matter who’s sitting in the Oval Office. Regardless of what your political beliefs are, this is nothing more than an appalling example of human greed. Do you really buy into the creative defense argument she was depressed and blowing $250K was “medication”? The court had no balls whatsoever in it’s ruling. It should have demanded immediate liquidation of all the things she purchased and the proceeds placed in a trust fund for the grandchild. And paying it back at $150 a month is a joke. Talk about a selfish you know what. If she was depressed she could have spent some of that money for professional help. Somebody should check and see if she’s in this country legally.

I’m for making her being forced to buy a $250,000 policy on herself, with the granddaughter the beneficiary (or a trust set up for her.) That would cost her a whole lot more than $150/month. At least there would be full restitution and all from the grandmother.
