and stop using up my air! As far as I’m concerned the helmet law only serves to slow the natural selection process. Be stupid if you want…just make sure you die when you’re hit because I don’t want more of your stupidity making it into the gene pool.

The major problem with this piece of legislation is that it is not feasible to enforce, which makes it a de facto repeal of the existing helmet law.

There is no way for a police office to determine which helmetless cyclists have paid the fee and which have not. Special tabs for the cycle’s license plate won’t work, because the plate is too darn small to see when its moving at 70 mph. Either helmetless riding will become a secondary violation or a lot of people who complied with the new law would be harassed unnecessarily.

Either way, there are going to be a lot more helmetless riders than there are fees paid.

If our legislature wants to repeal the helmet law (and I’m not saying they should or should not), this is real half-cocked way to go about it.

I live in Lansing and didn’t hear a word about this in the media. Was someone trying to sneak this through? Politicians like to get their pet bills through without discussion if they’re controversial. It still will probably be blocked in the Senate. If not, our idiot governor will sign it in a minute. I don’t like this at all, but maybe it’s time to let natural selection take over. I just wish that their injuries and deaths wouldn’t cost the rest of us so much. We certainly have way too much money to spend in Michigan on more public medical bills. You can tell that by the fact that our government almost shut down last month due to lack of money. They just increased taxes like usual. Thanks for the smart thinking Michigan Legislature.

Yeah, I’m not sure how that one got snuck through the House, but I have doubts as to if it will get through the Senate, and for once I can agree with the governor with her veto of the helmet law repeal from previous attempts, so hopefully she’ll do the same if it gets that far again (and for those that are about to write in and say how she’s “in the back pocket of big insurance”, she is definitely anything but).

I’m actually very surprised they’re even talking about anything but the budget because currently they’re trying to repeal the sales tax extention to services that they just passed after a 4 hour shutdown of the government and will probably bring us right back to the brink of a shutdown once again.

I guess it’ll be up to the local and county police to try to enforce this helmet law if the state government shuts down and takes most of the state police off the roads.

This bill belongs on the “This Is Stupid List”. Protecting yourself from injury should not be legislated. If you’re too stupid, lazy, or ignorant to put a helmet on you deserve anything that happens to you. To charge a paltry $100 for the priviledge of rolling the dice to be a “quad” does show the dire straits the state is in. Now that the automakers are on the ropes, Michigan could become America’s largest national parkl.

It would be but nobody here can sell their house so they can leave. Too bad, this state has a lot of potential, but we have made a lot of bad decisions over the years. Our esteemed Canadian governor is just the latest.
