As a native Buckeye, I’m embarassed that the government of my home state is so incompetent. The intern’s manager should be fired immediately. Without accountability and consequence, people won’t change. The intern should also be fired for keeping data in a personal automobile. Why does it always take an incident like this for people in charge to focus on what they should have doing all along? Where was the State Comptroller and Auditor? Who reviews data access and security protocols? I’ll bet money that none of the responsible parties are disciplined.

I am also a Buckeye and I am shocked that the established procedure for offsite storage was to have an intern take the data backup home. You asked a great question: where was the State Controller and Auditor? Also, the article had it wrong; based on a statement from the state the data was not encrypted.
