\”We\’re not admitting any wrongdoing in this case,\’\’ Ward said. \”We entered into this settlement just to put this matter behind us.\’\’

    BULL.

Then tell me why 3 friends of mine, all of whom are over 50, were \”laid-off\” 5 years ago and replaced by younger people who were willing to work for less?

Lucent has dirty hands and they (like Sprint) have been getting away with age discrimination for years and it\’s about time Lucent got bit on the butt for it like Sprint has.

What\’s more important: you owning your wallet, or my possession of it? Control is more important than ownership, obviously.

Government\’s job is to punish those who take others\’ property, and to return stolen property to its owner whenever possible. In instances like these, when the government is forcing companies to hire or retain employees it would rather terminate, the government is removing control over property from its owners – the employers.

This is called fascism. Scream and jump up and down all you like, this is called fascism.

What if my job is my property?

I am good at my job – competent, proactive, dependable and accurate; just like the Lucent employee described in the article. Does that mean the employer should have a right to take away my job and replace me with someone younger just because they will work for less than I have worked very hard to EARN?

Let\’s not talk in extremes because that doesn\’t lead anyone to understanding. \”Fascism\” is an extreme.

I\’m talking about a little bit of simple protection and job security for hard working people like myself who happen to get older every year. Why is that an unreasonable request?

    > What if my job is my property?

It is – if you own the business.

    > I am good at my job – competent, proactive, dependable and accurate; just like the Lucent employee described in the article. Does that mean the employer should have a right to take away my job and replace me with someone younger just because they will work for less than I have worked very hard to EARN?

Of course, because you are not the proprietor. Had you been \”proactive\” you would have had your own business by now and not be faced with being tossed out on yer ear.

    > Let\’s not talk in extremes because that doesn\’t lead anyone to understanding. \”Fascism\” is an extreme.

Fascism is the political system under Mussolini that, similar to National Socialism under Hitler, allowed most people to retain possession of their businesses, but then set prices, required certain suppliers to be used, certain people to be hired or not hired, etc. Sort of like we have in the good ol\’ USofA today.

    > I\’m talking about a little bit of simple protection and job security for hard working people like myself who happen to get older every year. Why is that an unreasonable request?

Because you are depending upon other people to give it to you rather than making your own way and taking care of yourself and your own as a free agent. Those who own -or control- the business that you work for are free. Those who live by others\’ leave are not freemen, they are dependents.

So Geezer, using your logic, then it is ok to discriminate, bully, harass employees because you own the business.
This is not 1970. It is because of people like you that has created an environment where the government must step in to protect the employee.

Geezer, you really have no idea what the purpose of gov\’t is. The true function of gov\’t is to protect its citizens from wrong. To stnd up for your rights and to protect your rights.

By your posting I believe your feelings about equality should not apply based upon race, sex or any other basis.

You truely need to study the origins of gov\’t protecting the workers of America which would include child labor law, fair labor standards, anti-monopoly leegislation etc.

Enjoy the studying for based upon your comments you have a lot to learn.

The purpose of government is to secure our God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, according to our founding fathers. When government can be used by me to take what\’s yours, it is corrupt.

This country was not built by whiners who sued for \”rights\” in the hope that some unelected judge would agree with them and help them get what they couldn\’t take on their own. You want a government that acts like a mother and wants everyone to \”play fair\” and not \”hurt feelings.\” This can only be done at the expense of the rights enumerated in the first Ten Amendments. God did not give me the right to cajole the government into taking or controling your property for my benefit.

You are the ones in need of an education into just government. I suggest that you start with this little eye-opener.

I light of taxation, gov\’t right to take what is needed for the good of the country A.K.A. eminent domain, thenthey DO have the right to take what was yours.
It appears that you are not aware of the rights of the gov\’t.

They also have the right to provide for your future through social security even if you outlive what you put into it. So yes ther maybe a time when gov\’t will have to take from others to give to you. The best part is that theose who are giving will NOt have the right to say NO it\’s mine. Luckily for you.

My father was not born in this country he elected to live here, build a business out of hard work, determination, and good old pure blood sweat and tears. I was brought up that I had to work with him as hard work is the foundation of good charecture. There are many who work hard give much to the gov\’t and cn still appreciate what they do for the downtroden.

Again you really do need to learn what gov\’t and this country is really about.

As the son of a sucessful business owner who worked hard, earned a lot I was raised to respect our gov\’t and believe that paying your fair share is a privledge not a burden. Taking care of those who need looking after is a responsability.

    You do need some lessons.

    Enjoy the reading

    Right on, Stunned.

The Statue of Liberty says \”Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!\”

No where does that imply that one must own one\’s own business in order to be treated fairly by one\’s employer.

It\’s the Statue of Liberty, not the Statue of Making People Give You Stuff. Also, I did not know that the words of Emma Lazarus on Lady Liberty were the law of the land.

If I determine that someone is no longer a benefit to my business and should be replaced, then so what if my business goes under – at least I\’ll have your approval for being nice.

France and Germany have basically made it impossible to fire anyone, and their unemployment rate is over twice that of the US. When it becomes impossible to fire people, it becomes dangerous to hire them.
