Former Neb. Producer Sentenced for Two Counts of Theft, Fraud

The Nebraska Department of Insurance released a statement saying that former insurance producer Daniel D. Volnek was sentenced by District Court Judge, Jeffre Cheuvront, to not less than four years, nor more than eight years, to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services on two counts of theft, both class three felonies.

Volnek was also ordered to pay the costs of prosecution. The Department of Insurance investigated Volnek’s activities. At one time he was a licensed insurance producer for Principal Life Insurance Company.

Volnek was accused of diverting thousands of dollars in clients’ monies for his own personal use. The Insurance Department in its written statement said that Judge Cheuvront’s sentencing sends a strong message that this type of activity will not be tolerated, adding that insurance fraud is the second largest economic crime following tax evasion. The statement added that, society, in general, has recognized that white-collar crimes can have devastating effects on families.

The Department urges consumers who suspect insurance fraud to report it to the Nebraska Department of Insurance Fraud Prevention Division by sending an electronic message to fraudprevention@doi.state.ne.us or by calling 402-471-2201.
