Time Almost Up to Register for BWC Initiative

September 23, 2004

Time is winding down for Ohio employers that want to save money on their workers’ compensation premiums.

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) is partnering with Ohio’s Safety Councils to offer employers that join their local Council an opportunity to receive a check equal to 2 percent of their premiums. The deadline to join is Sept. 30, 2004.

Safety Councils work with BWC’s Division of Safety and Hygiene to increase safety awareness. They also provide a local forum for occupational safety and health issues that are unique to certain industries and areas of the state.

“Safety Council members have the chance to talk with other business leaders about workplace safety and save money for their active involvement at the same time,” James Conrad, administrator and CEO, said. “Employers that become Safety Council members will not only benefit from the current discount, but will see future savings because of their interest in safety.”

Employers that are actively participating in the Safety Council program will receive a two percent one-time workers’ comp premium discount. In order to be eligible for the discount, employers must:

* Send representatives to at least eight meetings before June 30, 2005;
* Have senior management attendance at any safety council CEO event;
* Submit semi-annual reports for the 2004 calendar year;
* Join a Safety Council by Sept. 30, 2004.

If all current Safety Council members meet the criteria, BWC will give up to $3 million back to Ohio’s employers to reinvest in their safety programs.

“I encourage Ohio employers to take advantage of Safety Council Membership. It never hurts to learn more about keeping your most valuable asset, your employees, safe from harm,” Conrad added.
