With the Des Plaines River expected to crest at record heights later this week and reports of flooding increasing, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan warned homeowners and businesses to protect themselves from repair scam artists eager to make money in the aftermath of natural disasters.
“It’s truly amazing the speed with which these con artists show up to try and turn disasters into dollars by cheating consumers and businesses on storm repairs,” Madigan said. “It’s understandable that people want to rebuild and get back to normal as soon as possible, but don’t rush into anything. Take your time, do your homework and protect yourself.”
The law also requires contractors to carry minimum amounts of insurance for property damage, bodily injury and improper home repair. Contractors also must provide consumers with an informational pamphlet entitled “Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights.”
Madigan also reminded consumers to contact her office to check if any complaints have been filed against a company they are considering hiring for storm repair.
