July 28, 2003

Cincinnati-based American Modern Insurance Group, a provider of specialty insurance products and the primary subsidiary of The Midland Company, announced the addition of three senior executives and the promotion of a fourth to lead its property, casualty, sales and financial services divisions.

The three new executives—Bob Ritchie, executive vice president of the property unit; Mike Crain, senior vice president of the casualty unity; and Dick Dowd, senior vice president of sales—are key components in the company’s long-range plan to create focus and expertise within casualty line operations while enhancing the effectiveness of its property and sales functions, according to American Modern president and CEO John Hayden.

Ritchie recently joined the American Modern leadership team as executive vice president of the company’s newly created Property Lines Unit. Ritchie’s 23-year insurance career began in underwriting with Foremost Insurance and included positions with Zurich North America, American International Group, The Home Insurance Company, CNA Insurance and GE Commercial Insurance.

Crain is a 26-year insurance industry veteran, having served in positions with Allstate, Preferred Risk (GuideOne), Selective, and, most recently, Sentry Insurance Group’s Dairyland subsidiary.

Dowd’s 25 years of varied insurance experience began in commercial underwriting and progressed through positions at General Accident and Utica National Insurance, most recently serving as senior vice president of Personal Lines at Harleysville Insurance Company.

With the addition of Dowd to lead the Point of Sale and Agency sales operations, Bob Hilliard has been promoted to president of the company’s Financial Services Division, where he will take the lead in designing and executing strategic direction in this critical segment of the business.
