Mich. Psychologist’s License Suspended

April 24, 2003

The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has summarily suspended the psychology license of Irwin L. Greenbaum, Ph.D., due to a felony conviction.

Between Jan. 1, 2000, and Jan. 1, 2002, Greenbaum is alleged to have fraudulently billed insurance companies for individual psychotherapy, when the actual service provided was a group weight loss program.

As a result, on June 28, 2002, in the United States District Court, Western District of Michigan, Southern Division, Greenbaum pled guilty to and was convicted of Health Care Fraud, a felony.

Greenbaum was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment, placed on supervised release for three years and ordered to pay $14,551.18 in restitution. Greenbaum reportedly failed to report his conviction to CIS as required by the Public Health Code.

On April 8, 2003, Greenbaum’s license was summarily suspended pursuant to the Public Health Code, which provides for the mandatory summary suspension of a health professional’s license upon the conviction of a felony.

An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Greenbaum’s license.
