Spain Train Crash Probe Turns to Senior Officials

The judge investigating a high-speed train crash that killed 79 people in Spain wants to question senior officials of the country’s rail infrastructure company about track safety.

A court statement published Tuesday said Judge Luis Alaez has asked the company, Adif, to identify its board members since December 2011, when the section of track opened, as well as senior managers in charge of safety on the stretch near Santiago de Compostela, where the crash occurred.

The statement said they, and potentially others from Adif, will be questioned as suspects as the judge tries to determine whether the track was safe.

The train driver has admitted going too fast when the July 24 crash occurred and has been provisionally charged with multiple counts of negligent homicide.
