Norway: Cyclist Killed After Falling Into Ravine

June 3, 2013

Norwegian police say a 48-year-old man died when he accidentally fell 40 meters (130 feet) into a ravine during an amateur bicycle race.

Police spokesman Frode Kolltveit says the cyclist landed on railway tracks below. There were no trains passing at the time.

Kolltveit said it was unclear why the man, a Norwegian citizen whose name was not released, left the road shortly after the peloton had started Saturday in Bergen, western Norway.

The victim was taking part in the Bergen-Voss race, a picturesque 170-kilometer (105 mile) competition in the Norwegian mountains and includes stretches along the Hardanger fjord. The race was not interrupted.
